Managing bird activity remains an ongoing challenge for marinas worldwide, and Orakei Marina is no exception. While there is no single, foolproof solution, we continue to explore and trial different deterrents.
The ultrasonic bird scarers installed earlier this year have had a noticeable positive impact, though the gulls have recently become more active again. This is likely due to the breeding season and the presence of unoccupied berth fingers, which gulls favour as open resting spaces. To strengthen results, the Marina Trust is considering additional measures, including installing another unit on E Pier.
An interesting observation is that the new oil boom at the fuel dock – with its bright orange cover – has remained almost free of bird droppings, unlike the surrounding areas. While painting pontoons (or boats) bright orange isn’t a practical solution, it does highlight the need to keep exploring innovative approaches.
Our Operations Manager, Matt, is currently developing further solutions, with updates to follow soon. In the meantime, we encourage boat owners to consider fitting their own onboard bird deterrents to support our wider efforts. The Marina Trust cannot provide individual devices for every berth, so your cooperation makes a real difference. For advice on effective deterrent options available, please visit the Marina Office.
